DAWOUD KRINGLE PRESENTS THE MUSIC OF SHEIKH MAJNUN.
Sheikh Majnun is a mad mystic and improviser of recondite music.
Very little is known about him. The surviving biographical documentation is contradictory, incomplete, and in several places almost certainly fabricated.
Sheikh Majnun was a man of boundless wisdom tempered by a blatant disregard for reality. His music, while defying categorization, has been described as something that does not belong in this universe. Similarly, the instruments the Sheikh originally intended this music to be performed on do not exist.
In 2003, he recorded one album titled The Earth Must Be Destroyed. Its release caused great controversy. Listening to recordings of his psychoactive and otherworldly music has produced reactions ranging from spiritual enlightenment to psychosis. The original master and multitrack tapes disappeared under mysterious circumstances.
Before his disappearance, Sheikh Majnun appointed Dawoud Kringle as the Custodian of his music.
On this Ambient Chaos performance, Dawoud will present the first ever live performance of Sheikh Majnun's music.
Dawoud Kringle is a musician whose work has been described as sounding like "Hans Zimmer and Jimi Hendrix fighting over a beautiful princess." As a composer, improviser, multi-instrumentalist, he has released over 16 independent albums, performed in the US and Europe, and created music for film, theater, and dance companies. He is also an author, artist, producer, and whatever else he can get away with.
