Established in 1987, Artspace is one of New Zealand's key art institutions. Artspace has helped launch and sustain the practice of many significant New Zealand artists, among them Terrence Handscomb, Peter Roche, Fiona Pardington, Merylyn Tweedie, Julian Dashper, Derrick Cherrie, Marie Shannon, Michael Parekowhai, Luise Fong, Giovanni Intra, Jim Speers, Yuk King Tan and Gavin Hipkins. Artspace has also been instrumental in maintaining international dialogue, presenting key figures in international art.
Artspace operates in an expanded field of art practice, taking in aspects of moving image, sound art, new music and architecture. In addition to operating an exhibition programme out of our gallery spaces at Karangahape Road, we jointly organise and tour many projects. We have worked with virtually every major art institution within New Zealand, and many further further afield. In 2000 the Artspace board redefined its mission as threefold: to put challenging new art into play in the culture; to foster the conditions for the production and reception of contemporary art, and to inform and renew the mainstream for contemporary art. Our exhibition programme is determined by the board, on the basis of recommendations from the director developed in conjunction with the curatorial committee. The programme is drafted 12 to 18 months in advance in order to meet the deadline for our annual Creative New Zealand funding application. Mostly we invite artists and curators to put together shows for us; however we remain open to proposals. There are no deadlines, set proceedures, forms or criteria for proposals. They should be addressed to: Artspace curatorial committee, PO Box 68 418, Newton, Auckland. While we endeavour to return submissions, please be careful not to submit original, valuable or master material. Every year we curate a New Zealand New Artists show, and we invite any emerging artists interested in being considered for inclusion in our 2002 show to submit a portfolio by the 10 February 2002. Gallery plans are available on this site. Artspace brings key overseas curators and critics to New Zealand to explore our art scene. Previous visitors have included Louise Dompierre, Margrit Brehm, Rex Butler and Louise Neri. The Visitors Programme is a joint project with Creative New Zealand. Artspace is well equipped to receive classes and groups. The director is always happy to talk on current exhibitions and about the work of the organisation. But please give us a day's notice.
